What are polyether polyols?

A polyether polyol is a polymer with multiple hydroxyl groups, built from epoxide monomers such as ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. For B2B buyers the practical question is not just what a polyether polyol is, but which molecular weight, functionality and structure fit your formulation — flexible foam, coatings, pharmaceutical or industrial processing.

The right polyol controls hardness, flexibility and process behaviour in the finished system. We help buyers compare polyether polyol uses and options — PEG, PPG and random polyether grades — before the first sample is shipped.

Common types of polyether polyols

Polyether polyols are grouped by the monomer and the structure of the polymer chain. The families we supply are:

  • Polyethylene glycol (PEG) — water-soluble polymers such as PEG-4000, a white solid used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and industrial systems.
  • Polypropylene glycol (PPG) — hydrophobic polyether diols such as PPG-400, a clear viscous liquid used for flexible polyurethane foam and elastomers.
  • Random polyether — copolymers such as BPE-1600 with balanced hydrophilicity, used as defoaming, levelling and wetting components in coatings and industrial cleaning.

Where polyether polyols are used

Polyether polyols reach most of the industries we serve — we supply them to formulators in Southeast Asia, Europe, North America, India and the Middle East.

  • Polyurethane and plastics — PPG diols build flexible foam and elastomers. See plastics & rubber.
  • Coatings and inks — random polyethers improve levelling and defoaming in water-based systems. See coatings & inks.
  • Pharmaceutical and cosmetics — PEG grades act as excipients, binders and solubilizers. See pharmaceutical and cosmetics & daily chemical.
  • Industrial — PEG and PPG serve as process aids, lubricants and humectants across metalworking and paper. See metal processing and paper.

Polyethylene Glycol 4000 (PEG-4000) — representative imagery

Polyethylene Glycol 4000 (PEG-4000)

Polyethylene Glycol 4000 (PEG-4000) is a high-molecular-weight PEG polymer (MW 3600-4400, hydroxyl value 26-32 mgKOH/g, 1% pH 5.0-7.0) supplied as a white flake (Pt-Co <=50) conforming to Q/320621HA024. It is water-soluble, inert and non-irritating, used as a binder, thickener, lubricant and solubiliser across pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and industrial systems.

Polypropylene Glycol 400 (PPG-400) — representative imagery

Polypropylene Glycol 400 (PPG-400)

Polypropylene Glycol 400 (PPG-400) is a polyether diol of approximate molecular weight 400 (MW 360-440, hydroxyl value 255-312 mgKOH/g, acid value <=0.5 mgKOH/g, water <=0.5%, Pt-Co <=40) supplied as a colorless viscous liquid conforming to Q/320621HA046. It is a key polyol raw material for flexible PU foam, elastomers and polyether synthesis.

Random Polyether BPE-1600 — representative imagery

Random Polyether BPE-1600

Random Polyether BPE-1600 is a random polyether (colorless liquid, Pt-Co <=20, acid value <=0.5 mgKOH/g, content >=99.0%, 1% pH 5.0-7.0) used in coatings and industrial cleaning as a defoaming, levelling and wetting component. Its balanced hydrophilic-lipophilic behaviour controls foam and improves substrate wetting and surface levelling.

Allyl Polyethylene Glycol APEG-1000 — representative imagery

Allyl Polyethylene Glycol APEG-1000

APEG-1000 is a nonionic polyether monomer - allyl-terminated polyethylene glycol of molecular weight ~1000 (hydroxyl value 51-62 mgKOH/g, unsaturation >=0.75 mmol/g, 1% pH 5.0-7.0), a white-to-light-yellow solid soluble in water. The terminal allyl group copolymerises into polycarboxylate superplasticizer chains, making it a core raw material for concrete admixtures and a modifier in polymer formulations.

Butanol Polyether (Low-Foam Defoamer) — representative imagery

Butanol Polyether (Low-Foam Defoamer)

Butanol Polyether is a block polyether nonionic surfactant built from n-butanol, ethylene oxide and propylene oxide - a colorless-to-pale-yellow viscous liquid soluble in water and many organic solvents. Its EO/PO ratio tunes the HLB, giving adjustable wetting, low-foaming defoaming, lubrication, levelling and emulsification for industrial cleaning and process aids.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PEG and PPG?

PEG (polyethylene glycol) is water-soluble and built from ethylene oxide; PPG (polypropylene glycol) is more hydrophobic and built from propylene oxide. PEG grades suit aqueous, pharmaceutical and cosmetic systems, while PPG diols suit polyurethane foam and elastomers.

Can I request a polyether polyol sample before ordering?

Yes — free 500 g to 1000 g samples are available for evaluation. The buyer covers freight, and the sample value is deducted from a future bulk order.

Which industries use your polyether polyols?

PEG-4000 serves pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and industrial systems; PPG-400 is used for flexible polyurethane foam and elastomers; random polyether BPE-1600 supports coatings and industrial cleaning. Share your application and our team will match the right grade.
