What are emulsifiers?

An emulsifier is a surfactant that keeps oil and water mixed in a single, stable product. For B2B buyers the practical question is not only what is an emulsifier, but which type will hold your emulsion under real production conditions — temperature, pH, electrolyte load and shelf life.

The right selection stabilises your finished goods, simplifies production and cuts rework. The wrong one shows up as creaming, phase separation or off-spec batches — which is why we help buyers compare emulsifier examples and options before the first sample is shipped.

Common types of emulsifiers

Emulsifiers are grouped by ionic charge and by the phase they stabilise. The main types buyers ask us to compare are:

  • Oil-in-water (O/W) emulsifiers — water-continuous systems such as Tween-80 (polysorbate 80), used to disperse oils in creams, lotions and food emulsions.
  • Water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifiers — oil-continuous systems such as Span-80 (sorbitan oleate), chosen for heavy emulsions, cosmetics and industrial blends.
  • Nonionic emulsifiers — charge-free and highly compatible, popular in cold-process cosmetics and in systems where ionic charge would interfere.
  • Anionic emulsifiers — negatively charged and common in detergents, cleaning and agrochemical systems; see anionic surfactants.
  • Natural and bio-based emulsifiers — plant-derived options increasingly requested for natural and organic skincare and food lines.
  • Polyoxyethylene stearate (SG) — nonionic O/W emulsifiers such as Emulsifier SG-10 for cosmetic, fibre-processing and cleaning systems.
  • Ethoxylated castor oil (EL) — nonionic emulsifiers such as EL-40 for textile, cosmetic and metalworking fluids.

Where emulsifiers are used

Emulsion stability matters across most of the industries we serve — we supply emulsifiers to formulators in Southeast Asia, Europe, North America, India and the Middle East.

  • Cosmetics and personal care — creams, lotions and sunscreens depend on an emulsifier for cosmetics that stays light and stable. See cosmetics & daily chemical.
  • Food and beverage — emulsifiers in food keep dressings, sauces and dairy products smooth and uniform. See food grade additives.
  • Agrochemical — pesticide emulsifiers turn active ingredients into stable spray emulsions for even field coverage. See agriculture & agrochemical.
  • Industrial — metalworking fluids, coatings and cleaners use emulsifiers to blend oils into water-based systems. See metal processing and coatings & inks.

Pesticide Emulsifier 600

Pesticide Emulsifier 600 is an agricultural emulsifier series (light-yellow-to-orange viscous liquid or paste) that forms stable oil-in-water emulsions of active ingredients with good dispersibility and emulsion stability. It is formulated for EC (emulsifiable concentrate) and other agrochemical preparations and is compatible with common solvents and active compounds.

Emulsifier SG-10 (Polyoxyethylene Stearate, 10EO) — representative imagery

Emulsifier SG-10 (Polyoxyethylene Stearate, 10EO)

Emulsifier SG-10 is polyoxyethylene stearate with 10 ethylene oxide units - a nonionic O/W emulsifier, cleaning agent and softener appearing as a milky-white-to-light-yellow paste (saponification value 75-85 mgKOH/g, pH 5.0-7.0, moisture <=1.0%, HLB 12-13). It disperses readily in water for cosmetic, fibre-processing and chemical-formulation systems.

Span-80 (Sorbitan Oleate)

Span-80 (sorbitan oleate, CAS 1338-43-8) is a lipophilic nonionic surfactant that functions as a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifier. It conforms to HG/T 3508 as an amber viscous grease with hydroxyl value 190-220 mgKOH/g, saponification number 140-160 mgKOH/g, acid value <=8.0 mgKOH/g and water content <=1.5%, and is used in cosmetic, food and industrial W/O systems.

Tween-80 (Polysorbate 80)

Tween-80 (polysorbate 80, CAS 9005-65-6) is a nonionic surfactant that functions as an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsifier and solubilizer. It conforms to HG/T 3510 as an amber viscous grease with hydroxyl value 65-82 mgKOH/g, saponification number 43-55 mgKOH/g, acid value <=2 mgKOH/g and water content <=2%, and is used in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food systems.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between W/O and O/W emulsifiers?

In a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion the oil phase is continuous and water droplets are dispersed inside it — Span-80 is a typical W/O emulsifier. In an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion the water phase is continuous and oil droplets are dispersed in it — Tween-80 is a typical O/W emulsifier. The correct direction depends on your formula, texture and application.

Can I request an emulsifier sample before ordering?

Yes — free 500 g to 1000 g samples are available for evaluation. The buyer covers freight, and the sample value is deducted from a future bulk order.

Are Span-80 and Tween-80 suitable for food and pharmaceutical use?

Both are supplied for cosmetic, food and pharmaceutical formulation work. Share your target market and the regulations that apply with our sales team so we can confirm regional suitability before sampling.
